ABC's of Room 19


Attendance:
You need to notify the office regarding any planned absences.  If your child is tardy he/she needs to get a note from the office before coming in the classroom.

Art Spectra:
This year we will have art every other Thursday from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Bathroom Policy:
Students are allowed to use the bathroom once during class time. If there is a need for additional usage, a student must give the teacher five minutes either during recess or after school.

Birthdays:
If you want to bring a snack into the class on your child’s birthday, please feel free to do so. This is not mandatory. However, I do request that you give me at least a day notice in the event there is a conflict with scheduled school or curriculum activities.

Book Orders:
This year we will be ordering books from the Scholastic Book Club.  Based on interest, the order forms will come home approximately once a month.  If you decide to order books, please pay by check made out to the book club.

Buddies:
This year we will buddy up with Mrs. Beedle's 1s grade in Room 4.

Class Rules:
Palo Verde Elementary School rules are in your parent booklets and are expected to be followed. Our class rules are: Respect each others' right to learn & treat others as you would like to be treated. Failure to follow the rules will result in the following consequences.
        1st offense: Verbal Warning
        2nd offense: Name on the board
        3rd offense: Office

Class Website:
Class information, important dates and weekly newsletters will be updated weekly. You may access the website at http://www.freewebs.com/sananaqvi/ If you do not have internet access, please let me know and I will be happy to send you a hard copy.

Communication:
E-mail is my main source of communication. Please fill in your e-mail address on the form in the back. If you do not have an e-mail account, fill in your phone number.

Conferences:
Conferences are scheduled in November/December. You may schedule a meeting at any time during the school year if you have any concerns. During Spring I may also request to see you if there are concerns. Please do not try to see me before or after the morning bell. I will be more than happy to meet with you after school. You may e-mail me to schedule an appointment at snaqvi@pausd.org.

Donations:
This year students will participate in various activities and field trips. Please make a donation of $14. This will pay for the Mission Field Trip, class parties, and any additional field trips (Project Look!). If you have any questions or concerns contact me. You can send in checks or cash.

Field Trips:
Our trips will require parent volunteer-driven cars.  In order to be a trip driver, you must have an updated insurance card on file with the office.  Thank you in advance for your involvement.

Friday Folders:
Friday Folders will be sent out on Fridays. Please empty them and return them on Monday.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned each day. Each Monday I will give students a homework log that will detail the homework for the week. If a student fails to turn in homework repeated times, I will contact you.

Library:
Our library time is on Wednesday from 8:50-9:30 a.m. Check out day is Monday from 9:15-9:30 a.m.

Music:
Most 4th graders will participate in the General Music Program, with instruction taking place on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons. Please help your child to arrive at school with his/her instrument, and encourage practice at home.  Parents will be invited to a concert in the spring.

P.E:
Our P.E. time will be Mondays and Wednesdays. Please be sure your student is wearing athletic shoes on these days.

Reading:
In addition to our daily subjects and core books, we will have at least 20 to 30 minutes of SUSTAINED SILENT READING (S.S.R) time. The students may select any book from the school library or the class library. I encourage each student to bring books from home.

Rotations:
This year students will be rotating on Thursdays to other 4th grade classrooms. Mr. Winslow will be covering Technology the entire year. I will be covering the Solid Earth science unit in the fall followed by Poetry/Creative Writing in the Spring.  Mrs. Watson will be doing Math games and activities in the fall and teaching the Electricity and Magnetism science unit in the Spring.

Spelling:
Spelling words will be assigned on Monday. Spelling tests will be the following Monday. Words will be selected from “Spell it Write” workbook.  Exercises in the workbook are not required but recommended for practice.

Star of the Week:
The purpose of this activity is to promote community building through sharing and discussing. During their assigned week students are expected to bring in something that is important or special to them and then present it to the class. They can bring in their favorite book, music, souvenirs and pictures. They can also demonstrate a talent or do a dramatic telling of their favorite childhood story (just a few suggestions).

Vocabulary:
Vocabulary homework will be given out every two weeks from the “Wordly Wise”. Students must complete all the exercises.
